Danny Wheeler
In the years since Danny Wheeler made his first West End stage appearances, at age 13, in Carmen Jones (The Old Vic, Lawrence Olivier award for best musical, 3 years running) and Samson & Delila (The Royal Opera house, starring 3 Tenors star Jose Carreras), he has evolved from a singing and dancing music prodigy to the International DJ and record producer, who travels the world playing festivals and clubs and is ‘The man behind W10 Records’ (Mixmag, Jan 2009), a ‘hotly tipped future production star’ (DJ Mag, 2004) and critically acclaimed drum and bass artist of the 2000s, whose signature style is a kind of electro-funk dnb.
It is as a beat-maker that he deserves his reputation. His first release, 2004's Ghost, debuted at Number Five in the UK dance charts, while 2006's Aura was the critically acclaimed debut on his own label, W10 Records.
That year he also launched his residency at London drum & bass mecca Herbal, in trendy Shoreditch. W10 @ Herbal has been described as a night full of ‘tip top junglist talent’ (Time Out, 2007). The residency has been a hugely popular night in London’s club scene and has seen the crème de la crème of London’s Electronic dance music perform, helping W10 nights become one of the favorite nights in the clubbing calendar,
W10 @ Herbal has seen the likes of DJ Hype, Bryan Gee, Krust, Die, SubFocus, Clipz, A.I, Brookes Bros, Bugz In The Attic amongst others grace the decks An uber trendy dnb club night, in recent months celebs like All Saints singer Melanie Blatt, Jamie Winston and Alfie Allen have been spotted raving hard at W10. Danny’s DJ sets at W10 have been described as ‘a pleasure to witness’ (Knowledge, 2007)
Danny Wheeler produced a track with Blu James (a Basement Jaxx singer, who had a UK Number 1 with Red Alert) entitled 100 Times (2008) (with Stargate on the flipside) on W10 which was described by DJ Magazine (2008) as ‘Classy …. Love this to the bone. With a superbly shimmering, polished and attractive vocal, catchy chorus and pumping vibes…. Heated acoustic guitars fade in and out of focus, driving waves of funky slow bass booms penetrate and a production that's clearly from a trained musician as opposed to a mindless bass head. Listen to the end’ and they gave it 5 stars out of 5.
Additionally, Wheeler's persona — a hardworking, hardheaded striver who studied and gained a degree Bsc in Social Science at Southampton University (2002), after growing up in West London— was unique among mainstream dnb stars at a time. His mentors J-Majik, DJ Marky & Bryan Gee were predominant influences on his outlook. Rather than pleading for street credibility, Wheeler's style, like the man himself, is comfortable with his roots and as a result he communicates an honesty through his music.
‘His ethos is to promote good vibes music, to good vibes people’ (Knowledge Mag, 2007). Over the years he has been sponsored by brands like Nike, Puma, BoxFresh and Addict; who have featured him as a model in advertising campaigns.
Over the last few years, he has been on tour, taking his signature sounds as far as Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, Japan; Bejing, China; Bogota, Columbia; Toulouse, France; Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Tenerife, Spain; Munich, Germany; Oslo, Norway; Belgrade, Serbia; Rijeka, Zagreb & Split, Croatia; Podgorica, Montenegro; and all over the UK.
In 2008, he toured Argentina, Venezuela, Barcelona (where he has a residency), Serbia (another residency), Zagreb and Split in Croatia. In 2009, he has continued his W10 residency, and played at LTJ Bukem’s night at Fabric in January. In March he was back at Fabric, also in Barcelona and launched a successful joint party with Bryan Gee’s Liquid V Recordings and W10 at Herbal. During the next few months he will be touring South Africa, Czech Republic, Serbia, Spain and around Europe and the UK.
Forthcoming productions include collaborations with Kathy Brown (US house diva), Adam F, MC GQ, Kaidi Tatham (Jazz Maestro, behind 4 Hero & Bugz In The Attic), and vocalist AiNA as well as solo productions for his W10 imprint. He has recently signed tracks from Brasil’s XRS, USA’s Kathy Brown and has London’s DJ Wire signed to his W10 label.
