Bio L Double
Known to most as a DJ, producer, and the main face of BBC 1Xtra drum & bass - L Double has been a key figure in the urban music scene for many years. As well as a number of UK chart hits under his belt from former guises, he now runs Flex Records, continuing to pioneer music for the underground. His 1Xtra show is one of the most listened to of all 1Xtra shows online and he is unquestionably a heavyweight name in the drum and bass scene.
It all began for L back in the late '80s, touring with the European scratch champion, DJ Trix. In the '90s his work with cult group, Unique 3, had three UK top 30 hits, helping to lay the foundation for British house music. L Double set up Flex Records to enable him to focus on what he still to this day believes in - music for the underground.
No genre is left untouched when it comes to his influences. Hip-hop, soul, reggae and early house all contribute to the unmistakable L Double style of drum & bass. Working with Mickey Finn, Shy FX, 4 Hero, Elizabeth Troy, TC Islam, re-mixing for the Wu Tang Clan and Metalheadz, RAM, Reinforced, Labello, SOUR, Urbantakeover and Liquid Sky, he will no doubt have infiltrated your record collection at some point. In addition to his own releases, L Double and Mickey Finn remixed Pharaoh Monch's 'Last Days' for Adam F's album, Drum n Bass Warfare.
Tired of the same old flavour, when L Double met the Jungle drummer they came up with a heavy new stage act providing a platform to explore what they love about the music. Double indulges his love of hip-hop together with his passion for heavy drum & bass. The Jungle drummer's unrivalled drumming talents are unleashed on the crowd, incredulously matching the DJ beat for beat. Hosting the show are MC's including MC Wrec, Trip and Rodney P. DJ vs. The Jungle drummer has already smashed the London and Cambridge scenes and will continue touring the UK and Europe into 2005. 2004 marks 10 years in the business for Flex records. A series of E.Ps are being released this year under the title TYF. L Double also mixes a monstrous CD featuring the biggest Flex hits since 1994, these are essential for any drum & bass head who knows what's up. Now London based, L Double can be heard at Quality spots in London like Fabric and Herbal with Grooverider and the like, and he continues to play throughout the country. Regularly touring the USA, Canada, Asia, Australia and Europe, L Double headlined Greenpeace's Brazilian 'Ecosystem' events, Ecosystem 1.0 and 2.0. The party drew more than a million people and succeeded in banning the European mahogany trade.
L Double hosts BBC 1Xtra's weekly drum n bass show, Connexions. Listen out for tunes you won't have yet heard and interviews with the biggest names in the business.
